HOOVER, ALA.----Senior first baseman Clay Jones drove in a career-high six runs to pace 28th-ranked Alabama to a 13-2 win over No. 25 Georgia Wednesday at Regions Park.
Alabama (6-0) jumped ahead 2-0 in the bottom of the first as Jones (4-for-5, 6 RBI) and Jake Smith (2-for-4, 3 RBI)  produced run-scoring singles off sophomore left-hander Chase Hawkins. In the third, Georgia wasted a leadoff double by redshirt freshman third baseman Kevin Ruiz. Freshman second baseman Todd Hankins followed with a bunt attempt that was popped up to the catcher and then left fielder Johnathan Taylor and shortstop Colby May were retired on flyouts to center. Alabama added two unearned runs in the third after three Bulldog errors in the inning to build a 4-0 advantage. Georgia made a season-high five errors on the night.
Georgia (6-3) cut the deficit in half in the fourth as first baseman Chase Davidson and Zach Cone notched a couple of base hits off freshman Taylor Wolfe. Then with two outs, freshman designated hitter Brett DeLoach (2-for-3, 2 RBI) smashed a two-run double off the left field wall to make it 4-2. Wolfe, making his first career start, avoided further damage by recording his seventh strikeout of the contest, getting Ruiz to end the top of the fourth.
The Crimson Tide got the runs back plus two more in their half of the fourth to extend their lead to 8-2, chasing Hawkins and junior reliever Ben Cornwell. In the four-run outburst, Jones collected his third RBI of the night, Josh Rutledge had sacrifice fly and Smith smacked a two-run double to cap the scoring. In the fifth, Alabama tacked on two more runs on three hits and another Bulldog error for a 10-2 lead.  In the seventh, Jones capped his big night with a three-run home run.
Wolfe (1-0) got the win for Alabama while Hawkins (0-1) took the loss as the Bulldogs had their four-game winning streak snapped. Bulldog sophomore right fielder Peter Verdin has hit safely in all nine games this season after recording a single in the fifth.
“We faced a good lineup and couldn’t finish guys off, and we did some things tonight that we haven’t done all season, especially with the errors,” said Georgia coach David Perno. “We are missing some middle infielders and we’ve got some inexperience behind the plate and that showed up tonight plus our bullpen wasn’t very good.  Our first four innings we didn’t do much at the plate either.
“We’ll have to regroup and play more competitive this weekend, and if we don’t the scores will be the same,” Perno added. “Good baseball is just as contagious as bad baseball, and we didn’t play very well tonight.”
Before the game, Alabama head coach Mitch Gaspard presented the Bulldogs with a $1,000 donation to the Prayers for Chance fund for Georgia freshman infielder Chance Veazey. The donation was a collective effort from the Crimson Tide players, coaching staff and members of the Grand Slammers club. Currently, Veazey is paralyzed from the waist down as a result of a scoter accident on campus this past October.
Georgia continues its four-game trip this week, traveling to Tallahassee to begin a series with sixth-ranked Florida State (7-0). The Bulldogs will face the Seminoles Friday with first pitch slated for 6 p.m. ET.
