ATHENS-----The University of Georgia football team worked out for 90 minutes Friday, and the defense provided plenty of highlights.

"Today was outstanding especially the defense," said Georgia coach Mark Richt. "Without question, the defense is setting the tone for the spring. They are getting after it. I really liked their hustle, enthusiasm and running to the football. If the offense can match that, it will be good for the team, but the defense is the lead dog right now."

The Bulldogs worked out in jerseys, helmets and shorts for the third time this spring. On Saturday, they will have their first practice in full pads. The team will continue with lots of drills featuring competition, according to Richt.

"The drills are not so much how you can play but trying to win the drill, win the scrimmage whether its one-on-one, three-on-three or 11-on-11," Richt added. "Every drill, there's a winner and a loser, and you have to whip the man on the other side."

One of the most spirited portions of practice came near the end when the team went to 11-on-11 drills. When the freshman quarterbacks were on the field, the Bulldog defense made plenty of noise. Freshman Zach Mettenberger didn't seem to mind as he fired an 80+-yard TD strike to senior Vernon Spellman.

Georgia will have 11 more practices this spring until the annual G-Day football game. This year's G-Day game will be Saturday, April 11. Kickoff at Sanford Stadium will be at 1:05 p.m., and the game will be televised by ESPN. Admission is free to the G-Day game.
