Georgia will open the season Feb. 19, in Waco, Texas where it will play host Baylor twice and Duke twice. Junior RHP Justin Grimm will start the season opener against Baylor while senior RHP Jeff Walters will get the nod in game two against Duke. On Sunday, Georgia will play a doubleheader and the starting pitchers will be sophomore RHP Michael Palazzone and sophomore LHP Chase Hawkins. The exact order for Sunday’s rotation will not be announced until after Saturday’s game. Georgia has never faced Baylor and owns a 6-2 all-time mark against Duke. The top returning hitter for the Bulldogs is sophomore third baseman Colby May. He earned freshman All-America honors in 2009 after batting .339-11-42. In 2010, the Bulldogs are playing their 123rd season of baseball. It is the oldest sport on campus. Georgia’s all-time record is 2,016-1,492-23. Head coach David Perno begins his ninth season at the helm. He has a career record of 289-208-1 and has led the Bulldogs to the College World Series three times including the CWS finals in 2008. Perno’s Bulldogs are 6-2 in season openers. Georgia will play 10 of its first 18 games on the road before opening the SEC season at home against Auburn. The Bulldogs home opener will be Feb. 24 versus Persbyterian at 5 p.m. The last time Georgia opened a season on the road was 2002, Coach Perno’s first season. Georgia played in the Diamond Classic in Savannah, Ga., and the field included North Carolina, Connecticut and Armstrong State. Georgia went 2-1 in that event. The last time Georgia began a season at an opponent’s home field was 1996, going 1-2 at Jacksonville. Georgia will wear a special “CV” patch on its jerseys this season in honor of freshman infielder Chance Veazey who is now paralyzed following a scooter accident in late October. Veazey was projected to start at second base. Veazey is back home in Tifton, Ga., and completing fall semester classes online. He plans to return to UGA full-time next year and work with the baseball program. The 2010 Bulldogs have a preaseason ranking of No. 22 by Baseball America, No. 23 by Rivals.com, No. 26 by the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association and No. 31 by Collegiate Baseball. Georgia will have 16 games during the regular season that will be televised. Georgia has combined to make 55 television appearances since 2008 including 24 last season. Bulldogs On The Radio Fans wishing to follow all the action of the 2010 University of Georgia baseball team can tune in to Cox Radio Athens and via GXtra subscription on the internet on http://www.georgiadogs.com. As part of the Georgia Bulldog Radio Network from ISP Sports, all Georgia baseball games will be heard locally on WRFC 960 AM or WGAU 1340 AM. The first three games at the Baylor tournament will be on WRFC 960 AM while the fourth game this weekend (Sunday, 3 p.m. vs. Baylor) will be on WGAU 1340 AM due to a Georgia women's basketball game. The veteran Bulldog team of Jeff Dantzler and David Johnston will serve as announcers on the broadcasts this year. All games will be produced through the ISP studios in Winston Salem, N.C. Reserved seat tickets to see the Bulldogs play at home this season are $8 each and General Admission tickets are $5 each. SEC Coaches Pick LSU As League Favorite In 2010; Georgia Tabbed 3rd In the East The LSU Tigers are predicted to repeat as the 2010 Southeastern Conference baseball champions, as voted by the league’s 12 baseball coaches in the 19th annual preseason SEC poll. The Tigers, ranked No. 2 nationally in multiple preseason polls, seek to capture their league-leading 15th SEC Championship. The Tigers return eight position players with starting experience and 10 pitchers from their 2009 squad which claimed the NCAA National Championship. In the overall SEC Champion vote, LSU received five of a possible 11 votes. Florida received four votes while Arkansas had three. In addition to picking a preseason SEC champion, the league’s head coaches voted a predicted order of finish in the SEC Eastern and Western Divisions. In the Eastern Division, Florida was the favorite with 64 of a possible 66 points. South Carolina came in second with 52 points and Georgia third with 42. LSU was favorite in the Western Division with a total of 63 points. Arkansas was second with 59, while Ole Miss, who shared the overall title last season with LSU, finished third with 39. # #
