ATHENS, Ga. --- The new-look Georgia men¹s golf team will return to action Sunday through Tuesday in the Puerto Rico Shootout in Rio Grande. The Bulldogs have been idle since October, finishing the fall ranked No. 24 in the Golfweek/Sagarin Ratings. Georgia will use a lineup of junior All-American Harris English, redshirt freshman T.J. Mitchell, senior Wills Smith, freshman Brian Carter and freshman Bryden Macpherson. Smith joined the Bulldogs in the fall as a walk-on, while Macpherson arrived from Australia last month to enter school. Georgia also has added senior walk-on Patrick McShane and New Zealander Scott MacAlpine since the season started. The Bulldogs have had to juggle their lineup for a variety of reasons. Senior All-American Hudson Swafford had shoulder surgery in the fall and will miss the entire season, while junior All-American and Hogan Award candidate Russell Henley is sitting out this tournament due to illness. English is the elder statesman of the group, having played in 26 collegiate tournaments. That¹s more than Mitchell (four), Carter (four), Smith (one) and Macpherson (none) combined, though it should be noted that Smith played in 20 events in two seasons at Armstrong Atlantic State in the Peach Belt Conference. ³I think we¹re all excited about getting back into it,² Georgia coach Chris Haack said. ³The fall did not go the way we had hoped, but it toughened us up and we know what we need to do in the spring. We¹ve got to establish the chemistry that¹s so important to college golf, and that¹s what we¹re doing right now. We¹re pretty green, but the talent is there and the determination is there.² Joining the Bulldogs and host Purdue in Puerto Rico will be a field that includes No. 1 Oklahoma State, No. 10 Texas, No. 12 Alabama, No. 19 Georgia Tech and No. 28 Clemson. The teams will play the par-72, 6,902-yard layout at Rio Mar Country Club, with 7 a.m. shotgun starts on Sunday and Monday and a 6:30 a.m. shotgun start on Tuesday.
