ATHENS, Ga. – The sixth-ranked Georgia Bulldogs won their first two games in the Red & Black Showcase Friday by defeating Virginia Tech, 6-1, and Bowling Green, 19-4 in five innings, at the UGA Softball Stadium.

With the two wins, Georgia improved to 5-1 on the season. Virginia Tech, who defeated Western Carolina, 14-3, in the opening game of the tournament moves to 4-2. In the Showcase's second game, Bowling Green rallied from a 5-0 deficit and also defeated Western Carolina (0-2), 10-5, and with the split on Friday, the Falcons now stand at 2-4.

Against the Hokies, freshman Amberlie Saxton went 2-for-3 with three RBI. Saxton's first RBI on a single in the second inning proved to be the game-winning hit, and her two other RBI came on a two-run, opposite field home run to right that highlighted a four-run six inning.

With six runs of support, sophomore pitcher Erin Arevalo (1-1) limited the Hokies to one unearned run on three hits while walking just one and striking out a career-high nine batters in her first-career complete game. Virginia Tech's Kenze Roark (1-2) took the loss after she pitched 5.1 innings allowing five runs, three earned, on three hits.

Against the Falcons, the Bulldogs scored 19 runs on 17 hits, and the 19 runs were the most by a Georgia squad since the 2005 squad put up a school-record 23 against Charlotte.

Six UGA players had multiple hits against BGSU including a 3-for-3 four RBI showing from junior Alisa Goler and a 3-for-4, three-RBI performance from sophomore Ashley Razey. Goler and Razey were two of four Bulldogs to hit a home run in game as each hit two-run shots in the Georgia's 13-run third. Junior Taylor Schlopy, who went 2-for-3 with three RBI, led off the bottom of the first off with a towering shot to left, and sophomore Ashley Pauly, who went 2-for-2 with a career-high four RBI, hit a three-run homer that was also a part of the third inning. Additional multiple-hit games were put up by juniors Megan Wiggins (2-for-4) and Brianna Hesson (2-for-4). Hesson's two hits extended her team-leading hitting streak to nine games dating back to last season.

From the circle, junior Katie Murphy earned the win against BGSU by pitching the first three innings surrendering four runs on four hits to improve to 2-0. Freshman Alison Owen came on pitch two scoreless innings, and she struck out the first four batters she faced in her collegiate career. The Falcons' Zada Lines (1-3) suffered the loss.

Between the two games on Friday, Georgia recorded 11 stolen bases with six coming against Virginia Tech before another five against Bowling Green. After just six games in 2010, the Bulldogs now have 19 stolen bases in 21 attempts, which is almost 25-percent of the 2009 squads' 78 swipes.

The Red & Black Showcase continues on Saturday with four games on the schedule starting with Winthrop playing Virginia Tech at 10 a.m. ET and Bowling Green at 12:15 p.m. Georgia will then take the field at 2:30 p.m. in a second contest with Virginia Tech in as many days before facing Western Carolina at 4:45 p.m. Live stats for all games will be available on http://www.georgiadogs.com, and live audio will also be available for Georgia's contests.

Game 1: Georgia 6, Virginia Tech 1

WP: Erin Arevalo (1-1)
LP: Kenzie Roark (1-2)

UGA struck first against Virginia Tech with a run in the bottom of the first. After Schlopy started the inning with a walk, stole second and moved to third on a groundout, Goler drove across the run with a sacrifice fly to left.

Virginia Tech then produced its loan run in the top of the second on a pair of doubles from Courtney Liddle and Whitney Davis to briefly even the game at 1-1. In the bottom of the second, the Bulldogs earned the run back to go up 2-1 when Saxton drove in her first run of the day.

Georgia's big inning against the Hokies came in the sixth with four runs that stretched the score to the 6-1 final margin. With a runner aboard following an error, Saxton belted her two-run home run out over the right field fence. Two batters later, Pauly and Schlopy drew a pair of walks that would both lead to runs. Pauly later scored on a wild pitch while Goler plated Schlopy again, this time with a single to right.

Game 2: Georgia 19, Bowling Green 4

WP: Katie Murphy (2-0)
LP: Zada Lines (1-3)

Georgia scored early and often against Bowling Green starting with five runs in the first. Schlopy started the offensive attack with her home run to left, which was followed by a pair of walks that set up an RBI single to left from Razey. Wiggins followed with an RBI single to center and a fielding error on the play allowed Razey to score from first and Wiggins to round the bases for the innings fifth run.

In repeat fashion, Goler drove in Schlopy once again in the second inning against the Falcons. Schlopy drew a walk and moved around to third on a single from junior Laura Trout before scoring on Goler's single to right.

Bowling Green's scored its four run in the game in the top of the third on a pair of two-run home runs from Hannah Fulk and Paige Berger, but Georgia had its big answer in the bottom of the frame with a 13-run, 11-hit blitz that produced the 19-4 final score.

The inning started with Saxton doubling down the left field line followed by an RBI double to center from Pauly. Freshman Sara Sikes was hit-by-pitch next, and after a wild pitch moved the runners up, Schlopy delivered a two-run single to left. Goler then hit her two-run home run, and Hesson nearly followed with a home run of her own on a triple that went off the top of the wall in center. A second home run in the inning was far away though as Razey hit her two-run shot in the next at-bat.

Georgia's first-time through the lineup in the third was complete when Wiggins singled and was ensued by a walk to Saxton. Pauly then sent her second home run of the season, and third career, over the fence in right. Not only did it give her a career-high four RBI in the game, but all of Pauly's RBI came in the third inning alone. Sikes followed the home run up with her first-career hit, a single up the middle brining Schlopy up again. This time at the plate, Schlopy reached on an error and was thrown out trying to dig out three bases on miscue, but Sikes was able to score on the play. The final run of the 17 batter inning came on a Goler RBI double that scored Trout, who was hit by a pitch.
