WACO, TEXAS-----Sophomore left fielder Johnathan Taylor collected a career-high four RBI to lead  22nd-ranked Georgia  to  a 7-5 win over host Baylor in the season opener here Friday
After being retired in order through the first four frames, Georgia took a 4-0 lead in the fifth. Freshman designated hitter Zach Taylor reached on a leadoff walk and advanced to second on a bloop single to right by sophomore centerfielder Zach Cone. On a 1-2 count, junior first baseman Robbie O’Bryan put a bunt down that led to the first run thanks to a Baylor miscue. Pitcher Logan Verrett fielded it and threw to third to force out Taylor and then third baseman Raynor Campbell tried to complete a double play. However, Campbell’s throw sailed high and in to the camera well, allowing Cone to score and O’Bryan to go to second. Catcher Christian Glisson followed with a base hit. Freshman shortstop Kyle Farmer made it 2-0 with an RBI-double. After retiring freshman Todd Hankins for the second out, Taylor came through with a two-run single for a 4-0 advantage.
Baylor (1-1) cut the deficit in half in the bottom of the frame. Shortstop Landis Ware led off with a base hit and stole second base. Then with two outs and on an 0-2 count, freshman first baseman Max Muncy connected for his first career home to make it 4-2.
Georgia right-hander Justin Grimm pitched out of a bases-loaded jam in the first and kept the Bears off the scoreboard in the fourth when it had a runner reach third with only one out. Grimm was lifted after throwing 85 pitches through five innings. He allowed a pair of runs on two hits with three walks and six strikeouts. The Bulldogs brought in freshman right-hander Cooper Moseley.
Moseley struck out Campbell before allowing back-to-back singles to Josh Ludy and Chris Slater. After retiring Ware, Georgia turned to senior left-hander Justin Earls to pitch to the left-handed hitting Logan Vick.  The Bears left fielder drew a walk to load the bases for second baseman Joey Hainsfurther. On a 1-1 pitch, Hainsfurther tied the game with a two-run single. Earls came back to strike out Muncy to keep it 4-4.
In the seventh, Georgia reclaimed the lead. Glisson and Farmer had back-to-back singles and both moved into scoring position on a nice sacrifice bunt by  Hankins. Johnathan Taylor followed with another two-run single, pushing the Bulldogs back ahead 6-4 and giving him a four-RBI night. Last season, Taylor collected 10 RBI in 123 at bats, finishing the year with a .309 batting average. Georgia pushed across its seventh run in the ninth. Hankins smacked a two-out double and scored on another error by Campbell.
Muncy  made it a 7-5 contest when he led off the bottom of the ninth with his second home run, this one coming off senior left-hander Alex McRee who entered the game in the eighth. The Bears tried to rally but McRee, who walked three in the final inning, ended up striking out the side including Ware with the bases loaded to end the contest.
The Bulldog lineup was missing sophomore first baseman Chase Davidson. Projected to bat fourth in the order Friday, the 6-5, 239-pound native of Alpharetta, Ga., is out with an injured right elbow. He is listed as day-to-day. Georgia had three true freshmen in the starting lineup (Farmer, Hankins and Zach Taylor) and a sophomore catcher (Glisson) making his first career start.
“It’s tough on the road, and one thing we didn’t do tonight was get ahead of hitters,” said Georgia coach David Perno. “However, I’m proud of how we hung in there, played some good defense and had a big inning after that guy was dominating us early. We competed well and a couple of our senior pitchers who didn’t sign came up big with Justin (Earls) getting the win and McRee the save.”
The Bulldogs opened a season on the road for the first time since 2002. The Bulldogs are now 7-2 in season openers under Perno. A crowd of 2,670 at Baylor Ballpark watched the Bears go 1-1 on the day.
Georgia will face Duke (0-1) Saturday at 6 p.m. ET. Bulldog senior right-hander Jeff Walters will get the start against Blue Devil senior Jonathan Foreman. Walters went 2-0 with a 4.64 ERA last season while Foreman posted a 2-2 mark and 5.40 ERA. Duke fell to Baylor 9-3 in the opening game here Friday.
