ATHENS----Every Bulldog starter had at least one hit and scored a run as Georgia pounded Stetson 12-2 Friday in front of a Foley Field crowd of 2,061.

Georgia (4-2) jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the second, added a run in the fourth and then three more runs in the fifth to build a 7-0 advantage over the Hatters (3-2). Sophomore left fielder Johnathan Taylor (2-for-3, 2 RBI) continued his hot hitting including a two-run triple in the fifth that he tried to turn into an inside-the-park home run but was thrown out at the plate. Sophomore right fielder Peter Verdin (2-for-3, 2 RBI) smashed his second home run of the year in the fifth for an 8-0 advantage. He has hit safely in all six games this year along with freshman second baseman Todd Hankins (1-for-4, 2 RBI).

Sophomore right-hander Justin Grimm blanked the Hatters through the early innings and ended up leaving with two outs in the sixth with an 11-0 lead. He allowed just a pair of hits with four walks and seven strikeouts for his first win of the year. Stetson starter Lindsey Caughell dropped to 0-1, allowing 10 runs on 11 hits before leaving in the fifth.

“I felt good tonight, and it was an improvement from last week,” said Grimm. “I just had a couple mental lapses in a couple innings, walking a few guys. Our hitters did a great job tonight scoring a lot of runs and that makes it easy to pitch when you’ve got a big lead.”

The Hatters avoided a shutout in the eighth when designated hitter Aaron Crittenden connected for a two-run home run off senior Steve Esmonde. Georgia got 1.1 scoreless innings of relief from senior Justin Earls and freshman Patrick Boling made his debut pitching a scoreless ninth.
“Justin is battling, he’s throwing pretty good, but he has to cut down on the couple of lapses where he ended up walked too many guys,” said Georgia coach David Perno. “It was good to get Patrick Boling in there, and he did a nice job and Justin Earls continues to throw strikes and to do his deal. We’re getting good at bats, and I’m glad the bottom of order is shining and productive. We got Chase (Davidson) in there, he wanted to do more, but we’ll save him for when we need him more.”

Perno added that freshman first baseman Robert Shipman (2-for-4, 2 RBI) continues to impress the staff and his teammates. He made his second straight start as the Bulldogs welcomed back projected starting first baseman Chase Davidson who served as the designated hitter Friday. Davidson missed the first five games with an elbow injury. He went 1-for-5 against the Hatters, the lone hit was a long home run in the sixth.
“Robert has surprised just about everybody,” said Perno.  “Ever since he got here in January, he’s gotten a little better every day. He has been gaining confidence, and he’s a pretty talented young man. He has serious power if we tap into it, and he’s helped build depth at that spot as we look to get healthy.”

“The big test is tomorrow,” Perno added. “None of these runs in this margin count tomorrow, I want to see how we bounce off a little prosperity at home. We didn’t have many flat innings. Late we did, it was cold, so hopefully we can come play quality baseball and get in good position.”

The series continues Saturday with first pitch scheduled for 2 p.m.
