Georgia Riders Take Down South Carolina 13-6 on Senior Day Bishop, Ga.---Despite starting with a tie in the first event, the No. 1-ranked Georgia Equestrian team rode to a 13-6 victory over SEC-rival South Carolina on Saturday afternoon. This win takes them to 8-1 on the season. The Bulldogs began the day with a tie in Equitation over Fences. Freshman Grace Rogers (87) and Michelle Morris (77) posted the winning rides for Georgia. Despite losing her head-to-head match, freshman Carly Anthony was named MVP on the event. Georgia edged the Gamecocks 3-2 in Horsemanship to take the 5-4 lead in the meet. Freshman Maria Salazar (74.5), Ali Eidson (74), and Alicia Shrum (75.5) were the winning riders for the Bulldogs. “The sun was shining and the riders were aggressive,” said Georgia head coach Meghan Boenig. “South Carolina is a tough opponent so winning three out of four events was nice. The score doesn’t really reflect how close the rides were. This was a good test but we still have work to do. This team has potential and strength and we want to continue to ride strong.” Georgia continued to gain steam as they took Equitation on the Flat 4-1. Rogers’ winning score of 82 was enough to earn her MVP honors on the event. Other point winners for the Bulldogs were Daisy Whelan (76), Anthony (85), and Morris (67). The Georgia riders finished the meet strong with a 4-1 win in Reining. Senior Sarah Locker posted the MVP winning ride with a 78.5. Becca Haaland (75), Hannah Dyer (73.5), and Diandra St. Hilaire (73.5) also scored points for the Bulldogs. “We were really proud of our seniors today,” said Western assistant coach Jimmy Frebes. “Alicia Shrum had a powerhouse ride and Ali Eidson had a big win. Maria Salazar really deserved to win. She has been really focused and concentrated. Sarah Locker really rode for the gold! It was an awesome day.” Georgia finishes their action-packed weekend tomorrow, Feb. 28, when they host Baylor at 12 noon at the Equestrian Complex.
