GAINESVILLE, Fla. --- Georgia senior gymnast Courtney McCool tied for second on the balance beam with a 9.8875 in the individual event finals of the NCAA Gymnastics Championships Saturday at the O’Connell Center. LSU’s Susan Jackson won the title with a 9.9625.

McCool was the sixth gymnast to perform on beam, and her 9.8875 put her in first with four routines remaining. Stanford’s Carly Janiga tied McCool in the No. 9 position before Jackson won the title on the last performance.

“I wanted to go out there and make everything seem as simple as possible,” McCool said. “I wasn’t happy with the way I started out, but I finished strong. It was a great experience to be here at nationals and compete on this level one last time.”

This is the second straight year McCool has finished runner-up on the balance beam. Last year she was edged by teammate Courtney Kupets.

“I’m as proud of her as I can be,” said Georgia head coach Jay Clark. “She was great for us all season long, and she was great again tonight. She’s one of the most special student-athletes we’ve every had.”

After earning first team All-American honors on the balance beam and second team honors on floor exercise, McCool finishes her career with a total of four All-America honors. She was the 2008 NCAA Floor Champion.

Casey Jo Magee of Arkansas finished fourth on beam with a 9.8750 followed by Utah’s Kyndal Roberts (9.8625), Alabama’s Geralen Stack-Eaton (9.8500), Utah’s Jamie Deetscreek (9.8375), Penn State’s Brandi Personett (9.8375), Michigan’s Kelsey Knutson (9.7000) and Alabama’s Ashley Priess (8.8250).

The other event winners include UCLA’s Vanessa Zamarripa on vault, Janiga on bars, and UCLA’s Brittani McCullough on floor.

In the team competition Friday night, UCLA won its sixth NCAA title. The Bruins and Gym Dogs have combined to win the last eight national titles including UCLA in 2003, 2004 and 2010 and Georgia from 2005-2009.
