No. 9 Georgia Softball Returns To SEC Play At South Carolina This Weekend

ATHENS, Ga. -- The ninth-ranked Georgia softball team returns to Southeastern Conference play this weekend with a three-game series against the South Carolina Gamecocks in Columbia at Beckham Field.

The Bulldogs (17-4, 1-2 SEC) and Gamecocks (13-10, 1-8 SEC) will play a double header on Saturday beginning at 1 p.m. ET, and the series finale is scheduled for a 1 p.m. first pitch on Sunday.

Georgia will enter the weekend series having won its last two contests. The Bulldogs defeated Kennesaw State on Wednesday, 5-2, and posted a 6-5 victory over LSU last Saturday. Games two and three of the series against the Tigers were cancelled due to inclement weather. Georgia is 7-3 over its last ten games with the three losses being to the nation’s top-ranked team at the time.

South Carolina will welcome Georgia after splitting a midweek SEC double header with the Ole Miss Rebels on Wednesday. The Gamecocks won game one by a score of 2-1 in 11 innings. It marked the second time this season South Carolina has posted an 11-inning victory. In game two, South Carolina sent 13 batters to plate in an eight-run fifth inning, but Ole Miss scored five runs in the final two innings to win 12-8. South Carolina is 1-9 in its last ten games but is 7-4 when playing home contests at Beckham Field this season.

Live stats for the Georgia-South Carolina series will be available via georgiadogs.com.

Georgia-South Carolina Series History: In the all-time series between Georgia and South Carolina, the Gamecocks hold a slight edge at 23-21. The Bulldogs have worked on narrowing the Gamecocks’ series lead over the past few seasons including a three-game series sweep last year in Athens. Georgia has won seven of the last 10 meetings with South Carolina sweeping the series in Columbia in 2007.

Bulldogs To Watch: Sophomores Alisa Goler and Brianna Hesson each hit a two-run home run to lead Georgia past Kennesaw State on Wednesday. Goler, after starting the year with nine home runs through the first 12 games, had gone eight games without going deep until doing so against the Owls. In addition to leading the Bulldogs with 10 home runs, Goler leads the team with a .475 batting average. For Hesson, the long ball against KSU was her fourth of the year after not recording a home run in her freshman campaign. Hesson is fourth on the team with a .390 batting average behind Goler, sophomore Taylor Schlopy (.439) and senior Kristin Schnake (.415).

On Deck For The Bulldogs: Following the three-game series at South Carolina, Georgia will return home to play its next five contests at home at the UGA Softball Stadium beginning with a game against Mercer on March 25. A three-game set against Kentucky will follow on March 28-29, and a meeting with Furman on April 1 will round out the home stand.
