ATHENS-----Georgia used a pair of runs in the eighth inning to rally past Stetson 9-8 Saturday in front of a season-high crowd of 3,148 at Foley Field. Georgia improved to 5-2, scoring its first seven runs on the day with two outs. Meanwhile, the Hatters dropped to 3-3 despite getting three home runs from second baseman Roberts Crews. The Hatters grabbed a 2-0 lead in the first courtesy of a two-run home run by Crews (4-for-5, 4 RBI). Georgia got a run back in the bottom of the inning as sophomore Colby May singled and scored on a base hit by centerfielder Zach Cone (2-for-5, 2 R. In the third, Crews added a solo shot for his second home run of the year for a 3-1 advantage. With two outs in the third, Georgia grabbed a 5-3 lead with a four-run outburst. Cone drilled a triple to right center, scoring Peter Verdin who reached on a one-out double. Sophomore Christian Glisson followed with an RBI-single to tie the contest and then freshman catcher Brett DeLoach blasted a two-run home run to put the Bulldogs ahead. It was the first career home run for DeLoach. Stetson lifted starter David Burns after three innings as he gave up five runs on seven hits with two walks and three strikeouts. The Hatters made it a one-run game in the fifth on a two-out, run-scoring single by Sean Emory. Georgia got more two-out production in the fifth, this time from redshirt freshman Kevin Ruiz who launched his first career home run, a two –run smash to right center to make it 7-4 Bulldogs. Georgia starter Jeff Walters left after pitching the first innings, scattering four runs on nine hits with no walks and three strikeouts. The Bulldogs turned to freshman Blake Dieterich. Stetson responded by getting a run back as Kurt Schluter reached on a one-out double and scored on a base hit by Jeff Simpson. With two on and two out, the Hatters moved both runners into scoring position by executing a double steal. At that point, Georgia looked to freshman Cooper Moseley to face senior designated hitter Aaron Crittenden. After falling behind 2-0, Moseley battled back, and on a 3-2 pitch, he got the Hatter to bounce one back to him for the final out of the Stetson sixth and preserve a 7-5 lead. The Hatters managed to tie the game an inning later, getting a pair of two-out runs courtesy of a passed ball and an RBI-single by Schluter. He took second on a Moseley balk and with the count 1-0 on Simpson, Georgia looked to sophomore Cecil Tanner. He issued a walk to Simpson and then retired Spencer Thiesen to keep it 7-7. Georgia loaded the bases with two outs in the seventh but Stetson reliever Justin Dechert got freshman Todd Hankins to fly out. Crews connected for his third home run in the eighth to put the Hatters up 8-7. Georgia answered in the bottom of the frame. Verdin tied the game with an RBI-double and then later scored the eventual winning run on a throwing error by Dechert who got the loss to fall to 0-2. Tanner (1-0) notched the win while senior Alex McRee collected his second save by striking out the side in the ninth. “That was hard fought and we couldn’t quite separate ourselves from them,” said Georgia coach David Perno. “We’re having a tough time getting through the sixth and seventh innings but we’re working on it. We’ve got to iron out a few things and we have to figure out how we’re going to use Cecil at the end of the game. Not having been in an SEC game, we’ve gone about things differently, but we’re still in good shape. It’s good to haves McRee and Tanner in the back of the bullpen.” Georgia freshman shortstop Kyle Farmer missed the game due to a hand injury, and a timetable has not been set on his return. May slid over from third base to play shortstop Saturday while Glisson got the start at third base. May had three assists while Glisson had one putout and two assists. “We ran out there today with a catcher at third, who has never played third in our program, and he did a great job,” Perno added. “We had our third-string shortstop out there today in Colby, and he did a great job too. We’ve got to get guys in there in their right positions and get some confidence, and hopefully they’ll continue getting better and getting quality at bats. Once our guys settle in, they’ll be able to do their thing. Our lineup is still going to be good with these guys out, but we need to gain some continuity with our defense. “Christian is important to our lineup and he protects Zach Cone. Ruiz has been taking in work at third, but I just played a hunch on that starting Christian there today. Glisson will probably be back behind the plate tomorrow with (Michael) Palazzone on the mound. I’d like to see Michael get off to a normal start on our home field and having Christian behind the plate will help do that.” Georgia goes for a sweep in the series Sunday with first pitch scheduled for 1 p.m.
