ATHENS----Georgia completed a three-game sweep of Stetson Sunday, recording a 7-5 win to delight the Foley Field crowd of 2,198.

Sophomore right fielder Peter Verdin drove in a career-high three runs highlighted by a two-run home run in the fifth to put the Bulldogs ahead for good. Georgia went 4-0 on the week to improve to 6-2 overall while Stetson fell to 3-4.

The Hatters  took a 1-0 lead in the first as Spencer Thiesen led off the game with a base hit, stole second and scored on a two-out single by third baseman Mark Jones (2-for-5, 2 RBI). In the fourth, Jones gave the Hatters a 2-0 lead. He led off the inning with a base hit, then stole two bases and on his swipe of third, Christian Glisson’s throw bounced into left field, allowing him to score. Offensively, Glisson had a career high three hits and drove in a run. Later in the fourth with two outs, Jeff Simpson lined a run-scoring double for a 3-0 advantage. Georgia got on the scoreboard in the fourth on an RBI-groundout by freshman Zach Taylor and then exploded for four runs on four hits in the fifth to take a 5-3 lead. Verdin’s two-run home run in the fifth ended Kyle Maulbetsch’s outing. Verdin has hit safely in all eight games this year with three home runs. Glisson added a run-scoring single to cap the scoring for a 5-3 Bulldog lead.

In the sixth, Georgia extended its lead to 7-3 thanks to a bases-loaded walk to May and a sacrifice fly by Verdin. The Hatters closed the deficit to 7-4 in the eighth on an RBI-groundout by Jones and pushed across a run in the ninth off closer Alex McRee for the final margin.

“I don’t think people realize the position we’re in moving everyone around,” said Georgia coach David Perno. “ They’ve done a fine job. I’m pleased with this group. They’re the most coachable group we’ve ever had. If we tell them something, then they respond. From a coaching staff, that’s a good feeling. These kids are committed to each other.”
Georgia has revamped its infield throughout the year. The latest Bulldog to be sidelined is freshman shortstop Kyle Farmer due to a hand injury. For the past two games, sophomore Colby May moved to shortstop from third base and redshirt freshman Kevin Ruiz has played third base. The Bulldogs got back first baseman Chase Davidson in this series after he missed the first five games with an elbow injury. Second baseman/shortstop Levi Hyams has yet to play this season. He missed the first six games of the year serving a suspension while a sore back kept him out of the lineup in the Stetson series.

On Sunday, Georgia starter Michael Palazzone picked up the win to move to 2-0 on the year. He pitched six innings and allowed three runs on eight hits with one walk and four strikeouts. Senior Justin Earls pitched a scoreless inning and then Ben Cornwell and Cecil Tanner got the game to the ninth for McRee, who collected his third save.
“Cecil and Alex bounced back in back to back games, which is something we’ve never done,” Perno added. “Ben is coming along. He throws a lot of strikes, he’s just coming off Tommy John surgery, but we’re excited about what he’s doing.  It’s a great group and hopefully will be a lot of fun to watch.”

Georgia begins a four-game road trip Wednesday with a single game against Alabama at the Hoover Met in Birmingham. First pitch is slated for 7:35 p.m. ET, and tickets for the game can be obtained by calling 205-348-2262 or online at http://www.RollTide.com. After facing the Crimson Tide, Georgia will play a three-game series at seventh-ranked Florida State starting Friday.

“This is as tough of a midweek game and weekend series not in conference that you can have,” said Perno.  “We’re definitely going to get our oil checked this week. You’re going to get what we’ve got, whether it works out, I can’t tell you that. We’re going to get closer to healthy this week and try to piece it together.”
