ATHENS, Ga. --- The Georgia football team opened its 2010 spring camp with an hour and 45 minute practice on FieldTurf at the Woodruff Practice Fields under sunny skies and cold conditions Thursday afternoon. The Bulldogs will be spending a majority of their preseason on the two FieldTurf fields since construction to the Butts-Mehre Building has temporarily taken away the team’s two grass practice fields. Georgia is in the process of completing a $40-million expansion to the Butts-Mehre Building. “Energy-wise, I thought it was an outstanding practice,” said head coach Mark Richt. “It was just good to be practicing football. There was a lot of enthusiasm and all the guys were moving around quickly out there. The execution wasn’t perfect, but considering the volume of plays we were running, I thought we did pretty good.” A trio of defensive coaches had their first official practice with the Bulldogs on Thursday. Defensive coordinator/linebackers coach Todd Grantham, secondary coach Scott Lakatos and linebackers coach Warren Belin all took the Georgia practice fields for the first time. “The new coaches were locked in and very decisive with what they were doing,” said Richt. “I was impressed with how good they are as teachers and I think the players are eager to learn from them.” In addition, junior safety Jakar Hamilton and freshman offensive lineman Kolton Houston, who are both January 2010 enrollees, also practiced as Bulldogs for the first time. With the new defensive coaches comes a new defensive scheme. The Bulldogs will be running a 3-4 defense rather than a 4-3 defense. This change has been one reason for Richard Samuel, who played tailback his first two years, to make the switch to linebacker for his junior season. “One thing that helped Richard out there (today) is that all these guys are behind and pretty lost with the new defensive system so he’s really not different than any other player at that position,” Richt said. This will be the Bulldogs’ only practice before all UGA students begin their spring break following Friday’s classes. Georgia will return to action on Tuesday, March 16 and will have a total of 13 practices before the annual G-Day game arrives at Sanford Stadium on Saturday, April 10. Georgia opens the season on Sept. 4 versus the University of Louisiana-Lafayette.
